As a teen I found myself wanting to know more about God because my dad read the bible to me and siblings as toddlers. His job had required him to travel, so we travelled with him to Nigeria and were cared for by family which consisted of his mother, his sisters, brothers, and sister-in-law’s. I don’t remember dad reading to us while we lived in America but his passion for bible reading in Nigeria and allowing I and my siblings to listen to him as he read through the book of Genesis ignited a spark in me to read the bible as a teen at the age of 14. As I look back at the experience, I craved being close to my family, a longing for closeness, but didn’t realize my soul was craving to be connected to the creator- to God. In my hunger for God I bought a book about Angels and started reading the different testimonies of people who had encounters with Angels. I went to the bathroom of our 2-bedroom apartment and prayed to God: ‘God I know you exist, I know your angels exist, but I don’t know if Jesus exists.’ At that moment I felt a feeling of love surround me and I became a changed person. At the time, I didn’t realize it was the Holy Spirit. The school and church I attended didn’t prepare me for the spiritual encounter I had at the age of 14. I was learning to navigate life as a new Christian. When I read the book of psalms I felt joy and would encourage people around me to read the bible. I was now looking through a different set of eyes. The old Alice no longer existed, but this new Alice was aware of her surroundings, aware that Jesus exists, aware of being squeaky clean internally. I knew when I lied or did something I shouldn’t have done, this new me slowly faded away. I didn’t know about the concept of asking God for forgiveness until my adult years. Reading the bible, going to church, praying, and making time to hear from God and follow through with his instructions has helped me to become a Christian.
